Centre of Sustainable Excellence

Sustainability is a primary objective for Ripley Town Centre, and as such the Stage One centre has incorporated a number of sustainability initiatives and outcomes and is targeting a 5 Star Green Star Design and As-Built v1.1 rating.

Initiatives incorporated:

  • Naturally ventilated mall
  • Capability for improved outside air rates to tenancies
  • 480kW of Solar PV located on the roof and an innovative car park shade structure
  • Energy efficient LED lights
  • Capability for rainwater reuse to reduced mains water demand
  • Water Sensitive Urban Design Principles including the use of bio-swales for Stormwater management
  • Recycling bins installed for customers and tenants
  • Encourage individual tenancies to incorporate appropriate materials including Low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) for flooring, paints, adhesives and sealants and energy efficient HVAC systems, fans and lighting

Based on engineer design outcomes, at the time of reporting, the below was recorded:

  • 81% reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions compared to a Standard Practice Building
  • 66% reduction in grid electricity consumption via Large Scale Solar
  • 63% reduction Electricity Peak Demand compared to a Standard Practice Building
  • 74% reduction in Potable Water Consumption compared to a Standard Practice Building
  • 94.6% reduction in Construction waste going to landfill

A Green Star rating has been selected because research has shown:

  • On average, Green Star certified buildings produce 62% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than average Australian buildings and 45% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than if they had been built to meet minimum industry requirements
  • On average, Green Star certified buildings use 66% less electricity than average Australian buildings and 50% less electricity than if they had been built to meet minimum industry requirements
  • On average, Green Star buildings use 51% less potable water than average buildings
  • On average, Green Star As-Built certified buildings recycled 96% of their construction and demolition waste
  • Since Green Star’s introduction to the market in 2003, more than 6 million square metres of building area have been Green Star certified
